Saifuku-ji temple

There is a legend that this is the place where Shunjobo Chogen having dedicated himself to reconstruction of Todai-ji temple in Kamakura period was born.

There are a grave of Chogen and a well called “Kaminari-Ido”, Thunder-well.Saifuku-ji temple has a thunder legend; when the well in the precinct of the temple was struck by lightning, a mighty old woman closed Kaminari-sama into the well with a lid. Since then, a thunder bolt has never fallen to this area.

In Japan there is a custom to chant “Kuwabara” “Kuwabara” as a spell to avoid a thunder bolt. This spell originated from the name of this place.
