Izumi Koganezuka Tumulus

Izumi Koganezuka Tumulus

A keyhole-shaped tumulus having a total length of 95m constructed in the 4th century in the early Kofun period at the end of Shinodayama Kyuryo Hill.

It was excavated in 1950 and 1951 taking advantage of burial goods found after the war from the trench built during Asia-Pacific war. In the burial facilities, three huge wooden coffins covered with clay were found aboard, where a woman in the center and two men were buried from side to side. According to the fact that the bronze mirror inscribed Keisho 3 (Chinese names of an era 239), when Himiko, who is said to be a female ruler in ancient Japan, had dispatched of envoys to Wei, the kingdom of ancient China, were found, this tumulus was nationally watched with interest. Artifacts were designated together as important cultural properties. This tumulus was designated as national historical site in 2008.
